Tornado Ratings

Tornado severity is categorized based on the Enhanced Fujita (EF) scale, which assesses the damage caused by tornadoes and assigns them a rating from EF0 (weakest) to EF5 (strongest). Each category corresponds to a range of wind speeds and describes the extent of destruction.

EF1 Tornado (73-112 MPH):

An EF1 tornado packs winds ranging from 73 to 112 miles per hour. In these storms, you can expect to see tiles breaking off roofs, indicating the power of the wind. Cars and trailers may be pushed around, showcasing the force at work, but the structural damage is generally limited to relatively minor impacts.

EF2 Tornado (113-157 MPH):

Moving up the scale to an EF2 tornado, which boasts wind speeds between 113 and 157 miles per hour, the damage becomes more significant. Roofs are frequently torn off buildings, and large trees are toppled by the powerful winds. Mobile homes, being less sturdy, are often destroyed, and heavy cars can be lifted and thrown, illustrating the tornado's destructive capabilities.

EF3 Tornado (158-206 MPH):

An EF3 tornado, with wind speeds ranging from 158 to 206 miles per hour, inflicts even greater damage. Roofs are torn off even on well-constructed structures, demonstrating the tornado's ability to compromise even sturdy buildings. Trains, despite their weight, are at risk of being overturned by these powerful winds.

EF4 Tornado (207-260 MPH):

The EF4 tornado, with wind speeds ranging from 207 to 260 miles per hour, is capable of devastating destruction. Well-constructed structures are leveled, and even those with weak foundations are blown away. The intense winds in EF4 tornadoes have the potential to obliterate homes and buildings, leaving little standing in their wake.

EF5 Tornado (261-318 MPH):

At the top of the scale is the EF5 tornado, which boasts wind speeds ranging from 261 to 318 miles per hour. These tornadoes are catastrophic, leaving few, if any, structures standing. Cars, seemingly weightless in comparison to the storm's fury, become missiles flying through the air. EF5 tornadoes are capable of total devastation, reshaping landscapes and communities. They represent the most powerful and destructive tornadoes that can occur.
